  • Gulf Drilling International renames three jackup rigs acquired from Seadrill

Gulf Drilling International (GDI) has rebranded three jackup rigs it purchased from Seadrill earlier this year. The rigs, formerly known as West Castor, West Telesto, and West Tucana, have been renamed Al Bidda, Mesaieed, and Laffan, respectively. The $338 million deal, finalized in June 2024, strengthens GDI’s fleet with these 400-ft rated rigs, all currently active under contracts in Qatar.

Al Bidda is on contract with QatarEnergy LNG until April 2026, Mesaieed until May 2025, and Laffan with Shell until August 2025. This acquisition aligns with GDI’s strategy to expand its presence in Qatar’s offshore drilling sector, enhancing operational capabilities and reinforcing local identity.
