Velesto Energy has announced the completion of the wreck removal operations for its NAGA 7 jackup drilling rig, which sank off Sarawak, Malaysia, in May 2021. The rig’s tragic submergence was caused by rapid penetration into the formation during offshore drilling operations, leading to its tilt and subsequent sinking.
The wreck removal project, managed by Boskalis Malaysia, was conducted over two seasons in 2023-24. The operations involved retrieving the wreck, debris, and helideck, with a focus on ensuring environmental safety. Velesto has now received the completion certificate and release order from the Marine Department, signaling the end of removal efforts. Recycling activities for the rig’s remnants are scheduled for completion by December 2024.
Boskalis emphasized that all necessary precautions were implemented to mitigate environmental risks, and no significant adverse impacts were reported during the operations. The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in resolving the aftermath of the NAGA 7 incident.
