Equinor has secured consent from the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority to deploy the Deepsea Bollsta semi-submersible rig—managed by Odfjell Drilling—for plug and abandonment (P&A) operations on two wells at the Troll field in the North Sea.
The 2020-built, sixth-generation rig, owned by Northern Ocean, will permanently plug wells 31/3-Q-21 and 31/2-X-23, situated in water depths of 300–330 meters. Designed for harsh environments and capable of operating at depths of up to 3,000 meters, Deepsea Bollsta can accommodate up to 140 personnel.
The Troll field, discovered in 1979, remains one of Norway’s most significant oil and gas hubs. Continued investment in the area includes the NOK 12 billion Troll Phase 3 Stage 2 development, aimed at boosting gas production from Troll West.
